What is Transcreation?

Transcreation is the creative end of the localization spectrum: instead of translating a text, you recreate its intent, tone, and effect in the target language, with freedom to abandon the original wording entirely. It is standard practice for slogans, campaign headlines, app store copy, and anything built on wordplay or cultural references that do not travel.

The working process differs from translation. Transcreation starts from a brief describing the audience, the desired reaction, and the constraints, and the deliverable is often several candidate lines with back-translations so stakeholders who do not speak the language can judge them. It is priced by project or time, not by word.

For a software product, the practical split: UI strings, docs, and transactional email get translated; taglines, onboarding hero copy, and ads get transcreated. Machine translation is a poor fit for transcreation by definition, since the task is precisely the part that is not mechanical.
