Lokalise vs Phrase

A focused product-team TMS against a two-product enterprise suite.

Comparing Lokalise with Phrase is slightly lopsided, because “Phrase” is now two products under one roof. Phrase Strings is the original developer-focused Phrase: keys, file sync, a CLI and over-the-air SDKs. Phrase TMS is the former Memsource, a full translation management system for document and content workflows used by language-service providers and large localization departments. Phrase joined the Memsource Group in 2021 and the combined company took the Phrase name in 2022.

Lokalise is a single platform aimed at the same developers and product teams Phrase Strings targets, with its own AI, automations and design-tool integrations. So the real question is usually Lokalise against Phrase Strings, with Phrase TMS as the tie-breaker when you also translate long-form content at volume.

At a glance

For software strings alone, the two are close, and Lokalise is the simpler purchase. Phrase earns its place when the same organisation also runs document, marketing or vendor-managed translation and wants one platform for app strings and a full TMS, with features like MT Autoselect and quality scoring.

Where they really differ

One product or two

With Lokalise, developers, designers and translators all work in the same project and editor. With Phrase, software strings live in Phrase Strings and long-form content lives in Phrase TMS, connected under one platform plan. That split is an advantage if your localization team already thinks in terms of jobs, vendors and documents, because Phrase TMS is built for exactly that. It is extra surface area if all you translate is an app’s interface.

Machine translation strategy

Lokalise keeps machine translation simple: Google Translate and DeepL for standard suggestions, and Lokalise AI that takes your glossary, style guide and screenshots into account. Phrase treats MT as a routing problem. Phrase Language AI connects to more than thirty engines and MT Autoselect picks one per domain and language pair, while the quality performance score estimates how much a segment needs human review. Note that Phrase stopped offering DeepL as a native engine in 2026; you can still connect it with your own DeepL subscription.

Over-the-air and web delivery

Phrase’s OTA coverage is broader: alongside iOS, Android, Flutter and React Native, it supports i18next and Rails on the web. Lokalise ships official OTA SDKs for iOS, Android and Flutter and exposes an OTA API for anything else. For a server-rendered PHP app, both rely on file sync into your repository, and both list Laravel PHP arrays as a supported format.

Context for translators

Translators make fewer mistakes when they can see where a string appears. Lokalise links screenshots to keys automatically through text recognition and offers in-context editing, so a translator can check a button label against the real layout. Phrase Strings covers the same ground with screenshots, an in-context editor and previews from Figma designs. In practice both handle context well for interface strings; the difference is that Phrase adds a separate, full-featured editor in Phrase TMS when the content is a long document rather than a short key.

Choose Lokalise if…

  • You only translate software interface strings and want one product to learn.
  • Designers and product managers work alongside developers in the same editor.
  • You want AI translation that respects your glossary and style guide without configuring engines.
  • You qualify as an open-source non-profit project.

Choose Phrase if…

  • You also translate documents, marketing content or help centres through vendors.
  • You want to route machine translation across many engines per language pair.
  • You need OTA for React Native, i18next or Rails from the vendor.
  • Procurement prefers one enterprise contract covering strings and a full TMS.

If you are a Laravel team, consider LangSyncer

Lokalise and Phrase are both platforms you integrate into a release process. If your product is a Laravel app and what you need is to get interface copy changed, translated and live quickly, LangSyncer works directly with your lang files and __() calls, translates with GPT or DeepL, finds hardcoded strings with a code scanner, and publishes to production without a deploy.
