Crowdin vs Transifex

Two veterans of open-source localization, now priced in very different ways.

Crowdin and Transifex both made their names translating open-source software, and both still run free programmes for open-source projects. Both sync with GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket, offer a CLI and API, deliver translations over the air, and support translation memory, glossaries, QA and machine translation. Transifex has been part of XTM International since 2025.

Where they now diverge most is in how they charge and how they deliver. Crowdin prices mainly by hosted words and leans on a very large integrations marketplace. Transifex says you pay for one thing, AI-translated words, with seats, projects and hosted content not affecting the price, and it offers Transifex Native for delivering strings from a CDN.

At a glance

Crowdin suits teams that want the widest integration choice and strong community translation tooling. Transifex suits teams that want pricing tied to AI translation volume rather than seats or hosted content, and a native SDK approach for delivering strings without file sync.

Where they really differ

Pricing that follows different things

Crowdin’s bill follows hosted words, source words multiplied by target languages across projects, and paid plans include unlimited translators and proofreaders. Transifex’s current pricing follows AI-translated words, and seats, projects and hosted content do not change it, while human post-editing adds no usage charge. A project with a large existing catalogue that changes slowly may look very different under each model; run your own numbers.

Delivery models

Both platforms open pull requests in your repository. Crowdin’s Content Delivery serves translations from a CDN to its iOS, Android, Flutter, React Native and JavaScript clients. Transifex Native goes further for supported stacks: strings are pushed from code and translations are fetched at runtime from Transifex’s content delivery service, removing the file round-trip entirely. Transifex Live adds a JavaScript layer for translating websites without touching files.

PHP and Laravel files

Crowdin supports PHP files natively, without plural support in that format, plus a third-party Laravel app. Transifex supports PHP array formats, but its documentation says the parser only reads flat arrays: in a nested file it detects only the innermost flat array, and the fix is to flatten keys into dot notation. Typical Laravel lang files are nested, so check this before importing. Both support JSON for Laravel’s JSON files.

Quality checks and context

Both platforms check translations automatically, but they present quality differently. Crowdin runs QA checks for length, tags, placeholders and spacing, adds AI-powered QA and proofreading, and offers an in-context overlay on your live web app plus screenshots. Transifex combines translation memory fill-up, screenshots and live previews with its own quality index that scores translations, which helps teams decide where human review time is best spent when most first drafts come from AI.

Choose Crowdin if…

  • You need the widest possible choice of integrations.
  • You run large community translation with proofreaders and voting.
  • You need OTA clients for Flutter or React Native from the vendor.
  • Your Laravel PHP lang files are nested and you want them read without flattening.

Choose Transifex if…

  • You want pricing tied to AI-translated words rather than seats or hosted content.
  • You want strings delivered at runtime through Transifex Native instead of file sync.
  • You translate websites and help centres alongside the product.
  • You want to order human translation from partner vendors inside the platform.

Frequently asked questions

Transifex has been part of XTM International since January 2025, according to XTM’s announcement of the acquisition.
Both have programmes. Crowdin offers a free licence to open-source projects on request. Transifex runs a free Open Source Program for OSI-licensed projects without a funding, revenue or commercialization model.
Transifex supports PHP arrays but only reads flat arrays, so nested Laravel lang files need their keys flattened into dot notation first. Its JSON key-value format covers Laravel’s JSON lang files.
Crowdin, by a wide margin: it lists more than 700 apps and integrations. Transifex covers the essentials, including GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Figma, WordPress, Contentful, Shopify, HubSpot, Zendesk and Jira.

If you are a Laravel team, consider LangSyncer

Crowdin and Transifex are built for many stacks and both need extra handling for nested Laravel PHP files. LangSyncer is built for Laravel: it imports your lang files as they are, translates with GPT or DeepL in one click, finds hardcoded strings with a built-in code scanner, and publishes changes to production without a deploy.
