Crowdin vs POEditor

Scale and an app marketplace against simplicity and predictable pricing.

Crowdin and POEditor are both popular with open-source projects and small software teams, and both offer them free access: Crowdin through a free licence on request, POEditor for any project under an OSI-approved licence. Both sync with GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket, both support machine translation, translation memory, glossaries and QA checks, and both allow crowdsourced translation.

The difference is scale. Crowdin is a large platform with hundreds of integrations, AI features, over-the-air delivery and an enterprise edition. POEditor is deliberately lean, with pricing based on how many strings you store and a focused feature set that is quick to learn.

At a glance

POEditor is the simpler, more predictable choice for small projects that need an editor, a repository sync and machine translation. Crowdin is the better fit when the project grows into many integrations, mobile over-the-air updates, AI-assisted workflows or a large community of translators.

POEditor: Small projects that want a lean, predictable TMS

Where they really differ

Community translation

Both platforms let the public contribute. POEditor supports crowdsourcing through public projects, which is often all a small open-source library needs. Crowdin has spent years on community translation for large open-source projects, with proofreading roles, voting on suggestions and unlimited translators on paid plans. If you expect hundreds of contributors across dozens of languages, Crowdin’s tooling for managing them is deeper.

Delivery and platforms

POEditor’s path to production is your repository or its API: translations sync to GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket or Azure DevOps, or get exported, and ship with your next release. Crowdin offers the same repository sync and adds Content Delivery, a CDN with clients for iOS, Android, Flutter, React Native and JavaScript, so apps can pick up new translations without a release. If you only ship a web app on a frequent deploy cycle, POEditor’s model is enough.

File formats and Laravel

Neither platform treats Laravel PHP lang files as a first-class format. Crowdin supports generic PHP files, without plural support in that format, and has a third-party Laravel app in its store. POEditor does not list a PHP array format, though Laravel’s JSON files work through key-value JSON. A Laravel team with nested PHP lang files will need some conversion work with either.

AI translation

Crowdin’s AI features are built into the platform: Crowdin AI connects to large language model providers for pre-translation, AI proofreading and AI QA checks, alongside Google, Microsoft, DeepL and Amazon machine translation. POEditor offers Google Translate, DeepL and Azure AI Translator, and AI translation through your own keys for providers such as OpenAI, Gemini, Azure AI and Amazon Bedrock. POEditor’s approach keeps AI spending on your own provider account, while Crowdin’s gives you more AI-assisted workflow out of the box.

Choose Crowdin if…

  • You expect a large community of translators and need roles and proofreading.
  • You need OTA updates for mobile or JavaScript apps.
  • You want AI pre-translation, proofreading and QA built in.
  • You depend on integrations beyond code hosting and Figma.

Choose POEditor if…

  • You want pricing that simply follows how many strings you store.
  • You want a focused editor your team can learn in an afternoon.
  • Your project is under an OSI-approved licence and you want free access without an application process.
  • Your files are JSON, PO, YAML, XLIFF or another format POEditor lists.

If you are a Laravel team, consider LangSyncer

Neither Crowdin nor POEditor treats Laravel’s PHP lang files as a first-class format, and both deliver web translations through your repository and your next deploy. LangSyncer is built for Laravel: it imports your PHP and JSON lang files as they are, translates with GPT or DeepL, finds hardcoded strings with a code scanner, and publishes to production without a deploy.
