Crowdin vs Phrase

Breadth of community and integrations against depth of enterprise workflow.

Crowdin and Phrase both sell to companies that localize software at scale, but they get there from opposite directions. Crowdin started as a platform for open-source and community translation and expanded upward into enterprise with Crowdin Enterprise. Phrase started as a developer tool for software strings, then joined the Memsource Group, inheriting one of the best-known translation management systems for document and vendor workflows.

Today both offer repository sync, a CLI, over-the-air delivery for mobile, translation memory, glossaries, QA checks and AI translation. The choice usually comes down to who translates your content, how much of it is long-form rather than interface strings, and how much configuration your localization team wants to own.

At a glance

Crowdin is the stronger fit for software-first teams that work with communities, volunteers or many agencies and want a huge integrations marketplace. Phrase is the stronger fit for enterprises whose localization department also manages documents, marketing content and language-service vendors, and wants one platform for all of it.

Where they really differ

How each one charges for growth

Crowdin’s costs follow hosted words across your projects, and paid plans include unlimited translators and proofreaders, so inviting another volunteer or agency does not change the bill. Phrase prices a platform plan with several meters: seats for Strings and TMS, managed and processed words, machine-translation and AI units, and OTA requests. Neither vendor publishes a model that is simply cheaper; model your languages, word volume and contributor count against both before deciding.

Content beyond the app

If your localization programme stops at interface strings, Phrase TMS is capacity you may never use. If it includes help-centre articles, legal documents, marketing campaigns and files sent to language-service providers, Phrase TMS is the main reason to choose Phrase: it was built as a full TMS for exactly that work. Crowdin also handles documents and content through its integrations with CMSs like WordPress, Contentful and Webflow, but its centre of gravity remains software and community projects.

Machine translation and quality

Crowdin gives you a choice of major MT engines and Crowdin AI, which connects to large language model providers for pre-translation, AI proofreading and AI QA checks. Phrase leans further into automation: MT Autoselect picks the engine for each domain and language pair, and the quality performance score estimates how good a machine-translated segment is so reviewers can focus on the weak ones. Phrase dropped DeepL as a native engine in 2026, although it can still be connected with your own subscription.

Choose Crowdin if…

  • Volunteers, community members or many agencies need access without per-seat costs.
  • You run an open-source project that qualifies for a free licence.
  • You need OTA for React Native or a plain JavaScript app from the vendor.
  • You depend on niche integrations that only a very large marketplace offers.

Choose Phrase if…

  • Your localization team also manages documents, marketing and vendor jobs.
  • You want MT engine selection and quality scoring automated per language pair.
  • You need OTA for i18next or Rails web apps.
  • Your organisation prefers one enterprise platform for strings and a full TMS.

Frequently asked questions

Both sell to enterprises. Phrase is the more natural fit when an enterprise localization department runs document and vendor workflows alongside software strings, because Phrase TMS is built for that. Crowdin Enterprise suits large organisations focused on software and community translation.
Yes. Crowdin’s Content Delivery covers iOS, Android, Flutter, React Native and JavaScript. Phrase Strings OTA covers iOS, Android, React Native, Flutter, and i18next and Rails on the web.
Crowdin offers a free licence to open-source projects on request. Phrase offers a free trial but does not advertise an open-source plan.
Phrase Strings lists a Laravel PHP array format. Crowdin supports generic PHP files, without plural support in that format, and has a third-party Laravel app in its store. Both support JSON for Laravel’s JSON files.

If you are a Laravel team, consider LangSyncer

Crowdin and Phrase are built for organisations where localization is its own department. If you are a Laravel team that mostly needs interface copy translated and live, LangSyncer is lighter: it uses your existing lang files and __() calls, translates with GPT or DeepL, finds hardcoded strings with a code scanner, and publishes to production without a deploy.
